Scandi Style Kitchen

 

Here is a great Scandinavian style kitchen that has been designed for a Swedish-American family in Brooklyn, New York. I like how the dividers create the spaces without having to build walls - it keeps the overall interior spacious and creates a flow throughout. Read more about it here.

This freestanding unit houses the fridge and kitchen storage. It also acts as a dividing wall between spaces.

The divider becomes a bookshelf on the other side towards the living room.

Another built in divider, which houses the coat cupboard, defines the entrance and the living spaces.

Completed Work - New Kitchen

If there is one thing that I been doing a bad job of this year, that would be not taking photos of my work after it has been completed. It is so easy to finish a job and move on to the next one without reflecting on the whole process and enjoying the results. Also, interiors can be difficult to photograph! Excuses aside, I have been calling up a few clients and I'll be slowly going around and recording some of the work done this year.
This hardwearing family kitchen is located in a traditional house in Wellington - the client wanted clean lines, lots of storage and to use traditional materials like timber and stone to give texture.

Butler Sinks

A butler sink in a cabin kitchen from Smitten Studio

I was working on a kitchen design with a client when he mentioned he liked the idea of a butler sink. I haven't used many of these before so I did some visual exploring and now I think the sink is going to look great in the smart contemporary kitchen with traditional details that we have designed.

Blue Kitchen

 

 

 I am working on a lot of kitchens at the moment - so while researching I've noticed that I definitely pause and admire the kitchens with colour. While you can't go wrong with a classic white kitchens, there is something rather lovely about the depth and richness of using a colour, like this calm blue grey one in Copenhagen, designed by Kobenhavns Mobelsnedkeri. It contrast beautifully with the timber floor and the dark hardware.

Green Kitchen

The office is having a frantic week - however, among the chaos I did come across this interesting green european style kitchen. This is the second time this week that I have seen tiles installed on an angle in the kitchen. The other example was a white subway tiles installed in a herringbone pattern, which was rather effective. Food for thought...

Tiled Alcove

Here's a great way to break up the classic Scandi black and white kitchen - a little alcove with contrasting tiles. I visited a client today who has an existing alcove in her kitchen, just like this one, and we both initally thought we would cover it up, but now thinking otherwise...

Stylish Swedish Apartment

Here is another cool Scandinavian apartment - what I especially like about this one is the interesting colour of the kitchen. It is a muted mint-green-grey and it works fantastically with the rest of the interiors. I think it is great when people are willing to make interesting choices and make it work so well.

Stylish and Slick Kitchen

This kitchen is located in the mid-19th-century London home of designer, Harriet Anstruther and there are some nice details. I like the timber in the exposed negatives to create pulls for the drawers and the brass tap (a nice and 'warm' change from the usual chrome). Anstruther admits the marble benchtop is highly impractical but "dreamt about unlacquered brass and white marble" and got it looking good by continuing it up the splashback and the shelf. The Kitchen - Before. This was a former showroom kitchen.

The previous kitchen did not allow direct access from the front door.

We used bamboo flooring and Corian on the island benchtop.

An upstand on the island creates division and a place for the powerpoints at each end.

Bamboo was continued on the island as the surround for the shelving at the end.

We kept the client's chemistry collection from the previous kitchen and amped it up with some interesting lighting.

The lights slowly change colour - a disco in the kitchen!

Here is a kitchen that I designed and managed last year. I re-visited a few weeks ago and took some photos - I enjoyed seeing it again and to be reminded of the great transformation!
What I liked about this job was while the clients had some typical kitchen design requests like more storage, better flow, new bigger and better oven (had to come from Italy!), lots of drawers; there were other more interesting requests - they had commissioned an art tile for the splashback, they had a chemistry collection (signage, bottles) to display, they were keen on interesting lighting, they had a small scale art glass collection to display as well as a request for certain materials like bamboo flooring. I enjoyed working on this job and liked the surprises that my client handed me to work with.

White Kitchen with a Dash of Black

I have been away in Auckland to check out the New Zealand Gift Fair over the last few days which is why my blog has been quiet.
Back in the office - I have a new kitchen installation coming up in early October so I am in process of getting in touch with contractors and getting everything ready with the joiners. This kitchen was designed earlier this year so it will be exciting to see it come together in the flesh.
I found this Californian kitchen on Remodelista - it is from a cottage in Napa Valley and the kitchen is very similar to the asethetic of the kitchen that we are working on. It is going to be a white kitchen with panelled doors/drawers and we have a black stone bench top as well as black hardware to complete the look. I am project managing this job so will let you know about its progress. Watch this space.
